Plucked from the fire and given clean garments - Zechariah 3

Picture
Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him.

The LORD said to Satan, “The LORD rebuke you, Satan! The LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?”

Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel.

The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.”    Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put fine garments on you.”

Then I said, “Put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him, while the angel of the LORD stood by.

The angel of the LORD gave this charge to Joshua: “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘If you will walk in obedience to me and keep my requirements, then you will govern my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you a place among these standing here.

“‘Listen, High Priest Joshua, you and your associates seated before you, who are men symbolic of things to come: I am going to bring my servant, the Branch.

See, the stone I have set in front of Joshua! There are seven eyes on that one stone, and I will engrave an inscription on it,’ says the LORD Almighty, ‘and I will remove the sin of this land in a single day.

“‘In that day each of you will invite your neighbor to sit under your vine and fig tree,’ declares the LORD Almighty.”

Fueling the Fire of Revival with the Dead Wood of Apathy

Picture
It was an ordinary Sunday service, when suddenly in the midst of the congregation a small flame erupted. Unable to speak, I watched in amazement as most of  the congregants oblivious to the immenent danger sat motionless in their seats.

Robed figures appeared as the worship music began and they proceeded to snatch up certain individuals off the pews tossing them onto the fire, like dried dead wood - stoking the flames. My amazement turned to horror as I watched the flames stretch higher and  felt the heat intensify while many remained unmoved. I noticed some gazed, glazed eyed into the fire, entranced by what - I knew not. As if they knew no fear from the advancing flames - some were consumed where they sat.

The worshipers continued in their praise as the fire grew and the congregation shrank. In the flickering glow I could see tears rushing down the faces of those who remained - standing firm as the fire raged around them - even as the building disintegrated under the crackling heat. Drenched in sweat and seemingly untouched by the flames their voices rose louder with resounding clarity and purity. It occured to me at that point that although they remained - they had indeed been touched, albeit not consumed by the scorching flames.

Under the open sky, the fire freed from its confines pours forth - like a molten river purposely plotting its own course through the community. Billowed by the flames, from my vantage point I see that rivers of fire are flowing from the north and from the west, converging in a volcanic climax. In the deep recesses of my pounding heart whispers of warning echo - embrace the fires of change which leave nothing in their wake. Whatever the fire touches is changed - refined or consumed but never the same. Fire is falling from heaven and springing up from the earth and nothing in between can elude this holy encounter.                                                     Plucked from the Fire - Jan2011
